Amidst shocking statistics signalling Manchester as a hotspot for LGBTQ+ hate crimes, Manchester Pride reinforces its ‘I Choose Kindness’ campaign
As hate crimes targeting the LGBTQ+ community continue to escalate at an alarming rate, and with recent data revealing Greater Manchester as a region holds one of the highest rates of LGBTQ+ hate crimes in the UK, Manchester Pride continues its ongoing commitment to combat this pressing issue on this International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
In 2021-2022, Greater Manchester witnessed a 23.7% rise in hate crimes due to sexual orientation and a 69.6% increase due to gender identity, while nationwide, hate crimes against sexual orientation rose by 41% while hate crimes against transgender people surged by 56%. This stark reality underscores the significance of IDAHOBIT, a global day of action designed to raise awareness of the violence and discrimination suffered by the LGBTQ+ community.
‘I Choose Kindness’, launched in October 2022, remains an essential part of Manchester Pride’s strategy to tackle the hate crime surge and support the local LGBTQ+ community. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the abuse, violence, and intimation experienced by LGBTQ+ people, while also providing resources to help individuals safely challenge such behaviours and support the LGBTQ+ community.
“IDAHOBIT is critical in shining a spotlight on the issues faced by our community,” says Mark Fletcher, CEO of Manchester Pride. “‘I Choose Kindness’ is a powerful tool in our fight against hate crime, as it emphasises the importance of community, solidarity, and allyship - which is also at the heart of this year’s IDAHOBIT theme: ‘Together always: united in diversity’.”
Manchester Pride encourages individuals to report any hate incidences and stresses the importance of unity in combating hate crimes. The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) have pledged their commitment to the campaign, helping to connect with relevant stakeholders and promote the message of kindness and empathy.
The ‘I Choose Kindness’ campaign and IDAHOBIT are part of Manchester Pride’s ongoing dedication to fostering an inclusive and safe environment for the LGBTQ+ community. By raising awareness, providing resources, and promoting a culture of kindness and respect, Manchester Pride believes we can make a significant impact on reducing hate crimes and supporting the LGBTQ+ community in Manchester and beyond.
This IDAHOBIT, observed on 17 May and recognised in 130 countries, offers an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the global LGBTQ+ community, particularly in the 37 countries where same-sex acts or gender-affirming recognition and treatments remain illegal.
Manchester Pride calls on everyone to join in marking IDAHOBIT by:
“As we observe IDAHOBIT, let us remember the power of unity in diversity, and the chance we can effect when we choose kindness,” Fletcher urged.
